Quilty Fun Birthday Cake Banners

We have a lot of birthdays in our family in October.
October 11, 12, 13 and 14 and 27!
This quilty fun birthday cake banner is for my son and his wife.
My daughter in law Kim suggested that I make one for both of them, with the word "celebrate".
What a great idea!
I made a red velvet cake, it has a long tradition in our family.
Do you think this banner is both feminine and masculine?

My large Bernina 750 QE is in the shop for a repair.
I broke a couple of needles making some "sew together bags", and a piece must have lodged in the cutter because it kept jamming.
I sewed a machine blanket stitch around the letters, and machine quilted, with my Baby lock machine.

Not bad, but I really miss my "monster" machine.
It's super duper heavy and fast!

Here's a peek at the back of the banner and a closeup of the machine quilting.

My granddaughter Neo is turning 5 on Wednesday!
She told me she wanted a pink and yellow and purple cake.
Hopefully this meets her requirements :)

The banners always look so much better quilted!
I love the "sprinkles" border and the bright yellow binding.
Since Neo's (nay-oh) name only has 3 letters, I was able to draw them bigger, and they really show off the fabric.

I especially love the back!

Thanks for stopping by and looking at the cakes I baked :)

Quilty Fun Birthday Cake Banners

I've been baking so many cakes, that I've become a little distracted..
I showed these two quilty fun birthday cakes to 4 of my friends, including my husband, and no one ever noticed.
I noticed when I was just about done with the machine quilting.
Can you see anything wrong with these cakes?

I take such great care, choosing colors and prints that will match the personality and likes of the recipient.
Kennedy wanted a lemon cake, and I added strawberry icing.

Lindsay just wanted a pretty cake, I really love these colors!
I know that Lindsay loves Jadeite cake pedestals, so voila!!!
Have you noticed anything wrong yet?
I told Kennedy and Lindsay that I would bake some more cakes, but they said no, they liked them just the way they are :)

I'm not done yet, still have more cakes to bake :)

...and another!

I'm losing my head with these cakes, I forgot to take a photo of these cake banners, quilted and bound.
I love Lucy Jane's name, so I tried really hard to fit her whole name on the banner.
I don't know which border I like better, a colorful one, or a "sprinkles" one.

Benjamin wil be 3 years old this week.
I made him a blueberry cake, and the bow on the pedestal, has cars on it.

I hope you've enjoyed all the cakes I've been baking.
I still have many more to go :)
Originally, I was making the cakes just for my grandchildren, but all my daughters and daughters in law want one too.
That's okay, because I love making them things.
We live a day's drive from each other, so I think a lot about them when I sew for them :)
Have a great week!

Quilty Fun Birthday Cake - Bridger & Maisie

Bridger's birthday was on May 25th, I forgot to show you the birthday banner I made for him.
Bridger turned 10, so I made his on the masculine side, and he loves chocolate mint!

I machine quilted the cake with an outline stitch, and I used a free motion stipple stitch for the rest of the banner.
This is the first time I used a large dot for the border too.

I'm in love with the back, a vintage little boy and his dog, making a birthday cake!

Maisie will be 5 on July 7th.
I made her a strawberry cake with chocolate icing.
I took this photo at night, but it shows you how I do the letters, with Wonder Under.
I always have to remember to draw the letters backwards, and press the letters to the wrong side of the fabric.
Invariably I always make at least one mistake!

I just love this cake, and the pedestal is Cotton and Steel.

I used the "sprinkles" fabric for the border, and used a scrappy binding.

I used a "hand quilting stitch" on my machine when I outlined the cake.
I really like the look and may use it from now on.

I'm working on 2 more cakes which I need to finish this week.
How many more cakes do I need to make this year?
Let me see, 1 in August, 1 in September, 1 in October, 1 in November, 1 in January, and 1 in February.
That's 6 more.
I've made one for Charlotte, Paisley, Bridger and Maisie.
Eleven grandchildren and one daughter.
I wonder if any other daughters or daughters in law or sons or sons in law want a birthday banner....If you do, let me know :)

Farm Girl Vintage

This is my little 6" apron strings block.
I made it into a cute pincushion, just like Lori taught us on her blog, here :)

I made a 12" Apron Strings block, using scraps from my scrap bin.

I quilted my 12" block into a pretty table topper.

The orange back is so happy!
The fabric is Lecien Flower Sugar.

I really love the Autumn Star block, I used  Lori Holt's Vintage Happy fabric. I didn't use her fabric, I bought some of my own, lol!

I also baked a chocolate mint cake for my grandson Bridger who will be turning 10 years old this month.
I tried to make it as masculine as I could.
Do you think it looks suitable for a boy?

The backing fabric is by Michael Miller, but I don't know the name of the line of fabric because it was a fat quarter and there wasn't a selvage.
The little vintage bit is baking a cake with his puppy's help.

Here's a closeup of the jigsaw quilting, for the birthday cake banner.

I'm visiting my mom in Montreal right now, so next week I'll share some photos with you :)

Quilty Fun Birthday - Paisley

Lori Holt designed the cutest Quilty Fun Birthday Cake banner.
You can get the link to the FREE pattern and more information on my recent post, here.
I decided to make a "quilty fun" birthday cake for each of my 11 grandchildren (wow, I can't believe I'm that blessed!) this year.
I'm going to make each cake into a personalized banner, and each year their moms can hang them on the wall to make their birthdays a little more special :)
Paisley Louise will have her first birthday in May.
I made her a red velvet cake, because I know it's her dad's favorite flavor.
I made sure that the cake pedestal had a paisley pattern too!

To personalize the cake and turn it into a banner, I added a 4 l/2" strip to the bottom of the cake.
I used wonder under and cut out the letters 3" high.
I ironed them on and used a blanket stitch on my sewing machine.
I found some fabric that reminded me of sprinkles, and cut 2 l/2" strips for the borders.
I machine quilted it and voila, a pretty banner for Paisley :)

This is Paisley Louise in the Easter dress her mom made for her.
Isn't she as cute as can be?
One is a magical age :)

Quilty Fun Birthday Cake Banner and Tablerunner

Lori Holt designed this cake block to celebrate the year anniversary of her Quilty Fun quilt book.
pssst....The book is available at JoAnn's.
You can go here to Lori's blog to get the recipe.

The first cake I baked, was Strawberry Cheesecake.

I had so much fun, that I decided to bake a Chocolate Mousse cake.

Red Velvet cake is one of our family favorites.

I baked another Red Velvet in a different color combo :)

Then I baked a strawberry cake, they are pretty addicting!

I baked another strawberry cake with one of my granddaughters in mind, and came up with an idea...

I will bake the cake into a banner, one for each of my grandchildren.
Each year, when it's their birthday, their cake banner can be displayed on their special day.
Charlotte's birthday is April 9th, she'll be five!

It's hard to tell in the photo, but the border looks like sprinkles :)

I appliqued Charlotte's name with wonder under and a machine blanket stitch.

I made a tablerunner for Charlotte's mom, because she goes all out for birthdays :)
I thought she might like having a table runner for her festivities.

I used a dotted fabric for the border on the table runner, and they still look like sprinkles!
It may be a while before I get around to quilting it.

I wanted to show you a photo from last week's post.
Here are some of my grandchildren with their dolls and baskets that I made for them.

Here are two granddaughters who weren't in the previous photo.
I didn't get one of their baby sister, because she was sleeping :)
