Paper doll blocks

I started taking the Paper Doll quilt class from Lori Holt at Material Girls quilt shop  in the fall of 2009, with my daughter Lindsay.
I was only able to attend two or three classes because we moved to Florida.  I put this quilt on the back burner because it was a memorable and busy year for us....four grand daughters were born within seven months of each other.  I made each of them heirloom blessing gowns with matching bonnets, and flew back to Utah for each of the births.  One of them lived with us, so that was really nice!
I have been working on the blocks here and there.  The blocks are appliqued and hand embroidered.  I just finished one this past week.

Isn't it adorable?  I named the paperdolls after my two oldest girls, Rebecca and Lindsay.  They were born 16 months apart and did everything together, wore matching clothes (thanks Mom!) and even shared the same friends most of the time when they were young.
I only have three blocks to go, so I decided to complete the applique on both of them and I can just take them with me and do embroidery on the go.

This quilt will be so gorgeous when it is finished!  The border has little white pom pom trim, and each outfit the paperdolls wear and each activity they go to, are so detailed.

For instance, look at the jumprope.  It looks like rick rack with handles.

I use two strands of embroidery floss and stitch each rick and each rack, and the jumprope has dimension!

We have two road trips planned in the next month.  I hope to get a lot of embroidery done so I can show you the rest of the blocks and maybe actually finish the quilt!

Raffle quilt squares

Katie is making a quilt to give away in a raffle.  She let all of her teachers at Sew Katie Jane choose two fabrics from a selection of matching civil war reproductions.
I love my design boards.  I put the cut pieces on the board and simply carry the board to the ironing board and back to the sewing machine. I never get the pieces mixed up this way.

I really like star blocks, this one is called Farmer's Daughter.

This block is called Color Wheel, I thought it was different.

My two finished 10" blocks, just a little of what I have been up to lately.

A New Project

Cotton Way - Peppermint Pizzaz

Christmas is coming, it's almost July!  I will be teaching this class at Sew Katie Jean, it's a square table topper.  Instead of the aqua background, I will be using the "Ruby" red polka dot at the bottom of the pile.  The peppermint sticks are all pieced and cut on the diagonal, but I will simply be using the "Modern Vintage" red and white striped polka dot fabric.  The green and red "Modern Vintage" to the right will be the peppermints, and the rest of the prints in the pile will be the stars.  Since it is a small project, I will machine quilt it myself.  I should have it done by the end of the month.  I'll show you my finished table topper then!

Blessing Dress from Wedding Gown

My friend Kim has two really cute boys, ages 4 and 7.  She just had twins, a boy and a girl.  Kim wondered if I could make a blessing dress for Isla, her baby girl, out of her wedding gown.
Gasp!!!  Cut up your wedding dress?
Kim eplained that her wedding gown would just sit in the closet and it would probably be there forever.....This way it could be put to good use : ) and enjoyed ♥

Here is Kim in her wedding dress, isn't she beautiful?

I knew I could do it.  There was machine embroidery around the neck, edging of the sleeve and around the hem.  The hem of the wedding gown was straight in the front, but there was a huge, enormous train.  The train started at the side seams and made a big circle.  The hem was curved.

I wanted the embroidery from the wedding gown to be on the neck edge, back of the yoke, the  sleeve hem and skirt hem of the blessing dress, similar to the wedding gown.  It was difficult to get a big enough piece for the skirt because of the curve.
A closeup of the embroidery.

I modelled the pleats on the blessing dress after the pleats on the wedding gown.  I had to add an extra seam in the front of the skirt because of the curvy hem on the wedding gown.

I cut the sleeve for the blessing dress out of the sleeve of the wedding gown.  I didn't gather the sleeve to make it puffy.  Instead, I sewed a big pleat in the cap of the sleeve, to match the pleat on the front of the dress.

Here is cute little Isla in her blessing dress.
She is so pretty!

Notice the embroidery on the bottom of the skirt :)

What a fun project this was, I really enjoyed designing Isla's dress.

There is more than enough fabric left to sew Isla a baptism dress when she turns 8 years old.   Princess seams in the front would help get the embroidery along the hem of the dress in smaller pieces.  I think a band around the waist would be really pretty, to match the band on the wedding gown.

Small Treat Totes and a Giveaway!!!

Today, I'm sharing a tutorial with you and one viewer will be chosen to win one of my Small Treat Totes.
Just two fat quarters will make four of these little treat totes.  I say little, because they measure 4" X 4".
I decided to make 8 little treat totes, so I used four coordinating fat quarters.  (A fat quarter measures 18" X 22".  It is really a quarter of a yard, but doubled so it is called a fat quarter)

I made mine for Easter, but they aren't pastel.  I chose pink because I am giving them to some cute little girls for Easter.  Also, I didn't have any pastel shades on hand :)
You can fill these little totes with chocolate bunnies!

You can fill them with fluffy bunnies!

A fluffy bunny for each bag :)

Here is the link for the tutorial.
These small treat totes are so fun and really easy to make.

You have four chances to win one of these bags.

Lined Travel Bags

My friend Lori posted a great tutorial on her blog.
I had been looking for some gifts to make and when I saw these Lined Travel Bags, I knew they were perfect!  I made eight of them.

They are pretty big, 10" wide and 16" tall.
You can use them for hair products such as a bottle of hair spray, a hairbrush and a curling iron.  All of that will fit in one bag.
You can use the bag for a pair of shoes, sweaters, undergarments, exercise clothes, etc.
The lining matches the bows!

I just love these bags, they are so pretty and feminine.

If you want to make one, the tutorial is here.

Don't forget my GIVEAWAY!!!
This trifold sewing kit.

You have four chances to win......

Sewing Kit

I made this sewing kit for my son who is going on a church mission for two years to Brazil.
My son is an Eagle Scout, so I thought that it would be "manly" to use this theme.  Besides, everything else I have is pink with flowers.
I had some Boy Scout fabric that I made a quilt out of a few years ago, so I made this sewing kit from the scraps. I cut out the rank badges and the words from the Scout law from the fabric, ironed them to wonder under and ironed them onto some charcoal colored fabric.  Then I outline stitched them so they wouldn't unravel.

The vertical tab (red star fabric to the left of the felt) holds two spools of thread and closes with velcro.

I like all the pockets and the scissor holder.

This is the back of the kit.

These are all the things that are being put into the kit....a usb drive (non sewing related....), iron on reflective tape, thread holders, iron on mending fabric, a seam ripper (who doesn't need one of these!!!), folding scissors, safety pins and a "pink" tape measure (you never know!!...about the tape measure I mean, not the pink :))

Here is the sewing kit fully loaded!!!

Come back tomorrow.  I made a really cute "girlie" sewing kit, complete with a TUTORIAL and a GIVEAWAY!!!!

Doll Bassinet

I did a lot of sewing this past Christmas. I bought a baby doll for three of our grandaughters, and made a bassinet, pillow and quilt to match their doll's outfits.
This is one of the quilts I made.  Nine 5" squares sewn together, machine quilted and bound.

Doll quilts are so cute...you can use them for table toppers, placemats, mug rugs, centerpieces, or even as doll quilts :)

I love this little bassinet.  I made two this color.

When I was sewing these bassinets with their little pillows and quilts, I wanted to buy a doll of my own so badly just so I could see how sweet it looked lying in its own little snuggly bed.

I made one like this.

I was fortunate enough to see one of my grandaughters open her gift.  Charlotte was pretty happy!

Charlotte takes her baby with her when she goes grocery shopping.

Charlotte loves feeding her baby, she is such a good Mommy :)

Reagan likes her doll too!

Reagan carries her bassinet like a purse!  Ha ha!!

Reagan is so precious with her little doll, she is a good Mommy too.  Grandchildren are a blessing
