Farm Girl Vintage, Strawberry quilt update

post signature
I posted about this cute Strawberry quilt I made for my grand daughter Charlotte on her 7th birthday.
You can type Strawberry quilt in the search bar if you want to read about it and see photos :)

I gave it to Charlotte, and she loved it!!!
Her mom says that she carries it around the house with her all the time.

A sleeping angel...she loves the quilt that I made for her :)

Farm Girl Sampler quilt part 2

post signature
I mentioned in my last post, that I'm making the Farm Girl Vintage Sampler quilt.  These are blocks #11-20.
These blocks are all 6", and pretty finicky to work with.
Some of them, anyway :)
This is the Cool Threads block

Peas and Carrots block

Barn Cat block

Baby Chick block (I forgot to embroider her eye...)

Honey Bee block

Scrappy Strawberry block

Farmhouse block
I really love this block, I want to make the Farmhouse Lane quilt.
It's really cute!

Kitchen Window block

Apron Strings block

Chicken Foot block

I tried to use a different background for every block to make the quilt look extra scrappy.
I'm sashing the quilt with a white on white polka dot fabric.
I really pride myself on using the fabric I have in my stash, but at this rate, I'll never be able to use it all up!
The true sign of a quilter :)

I just can't get enough of "Farm Girl Vintage"!
I'm going to make the Farm Girl Vintage Sampler quilt, and today I'll show you 10 of my 48 blocks.
They're all 6" and I think they're difficult to make, because the some of the pieces are so little!
This is the Butter Churn block.

Out to Pasture block

Scrappy Maple Leaf block

Spring Star block

Penny Pig block

Kettle's On! block

Patchwork Pumpkin block

Country Crossroads block

Pie Cherries block

Churn Dash block (with a heart)

I made most of these blocks when Lori's book first came out, and they've been sitting in a pile ever since!
Thanks for visiting :)

Farm Girl Vintage, Strawberry quilt

I made the Scrappy Strawberry block, and my Bees Knees quilting bee helped me make most of the rest of the blocks.
I made an orangey and a pinkish strawberry, and added some blue tops as well as the green ones.
I wanted the strawberries to pop, so I used a green border instead of a red or pink one.

I signed up for a Jackie Gehring quilt class with your walking foot, on Craftsy.
I learned this machine quilting technique there :)

All the machine quilting was time consuming, but worth it :)

I used a soft pink minky for the back.

I love the look of all of these squares!
I'm so happy that I finished this quilt!

Farm Girl Vintage, Farm Fresh

post signature
I went to Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage Retreat last summer, exclusively for a specific group of Instagram friends.
Lori told us what color to bring for the background and the sashing, for the surprise quilt that she designed for us.
The surprise quilt was called "Farm Fresh", and we all oohed and aahed over it!!!
While everyone else was cutting and sewing their fruit, veggies and canning jars, I was cutting and sewing my farm fresh banner.
I would have chosen fabric with more contrast if I had seen the quilt first, but I'm still happy with the results.

Our retreat was held at a fabric shop, so there was plenty of fabric to choose from!
I quickly decided that I would make 4 cans of fruit, 4 cans of vegetables, and a can of honey.
I cut and sewed my 6" blocks of produce, and then took my little blocks to the fabric shop to see what colors and prints would make them pop!

The other day, I finished sewing the tablecloth, and my quilt top was finished!
As I stand back and look at my finished quilt top, I really love all the color combinations.
It's bright and happy!
While I was admiring my quilt, I realized one thing....
Peas aren't orange, tomatoes aren't yellow, corn isn't green, carrots aren't blue, etc.
Look at it this way, my canning jars are opaque, they're candy to the eye!
I'm not really sure how I'm going to use this quilt...maybe there will be a country fair sometime soon, where I can display my beautiful quilt.
Maybe I should enter it in next year's California State Fair :)

Farm Girl Vintage, Mama Hen Quilt!

I'm going to tell you the story of how my "Mama Hen" quilt was born....
I made the quilt for my son Jordan's family.
Jordan built a really nice chicken coup in their backyard, which houses their chickens.
This is one of my little grandsons in their coup, he was a little nervous of the chickens, lol!

I thought Jordan's family would appreciate this quilt.
I'm a member of the Bees Knees, a Quilting Bee, and my month was September.
I cut out the fabric (all of it is Lori Holt fabric) for each Mama Hen block with some details, and mailed them all out.

This is the block that I made, red is my favorite color and I love the Mason jars!

Eventually, the blocks began to arrive, very exciting!

I was making a Country Fair quilt for my daughter Rebecca at the same time.
The block that my friend Nedra (her blog is Cactus Needle) sent matched Rebecca's quilt so well, that I used it in her quilt, instead of the hen with the star that I had planned to use.

So exciting, Lori Holt (her blog is Bee in my Bonnet) was in the quilting bee and this is the block that she sent me, along with one of her fabulous Seams Sew Easy!  for sewing flying geese.

Here are all 12 hens, notice the hen with the star that I made?
I think she's a great focal point.
Sinta from the blog Pink Pincushion, very graciously made me an extra hen, because she knew I was missing one.
It's the cute hen under the star one, with the wing upside down.
I just love that little hen, I wouldn't change a thing about her!
The little hen represents kindness and thoughtfulness :)

I used the trick of taking a black and white photo to make sure that the color saturation was even.

All the posts are a different print, and I used chicken wire fabric for the sashing.

I have a long, wide tiled hallway where I lay my sandwiched quilts to pin them before I machine quilt.
The border fabric looks like newsprint, which is often used to line the chicken coop with.
I don't really know why, I've just heard that!  LOL

I bought a class on Craftsy and loved it!
Jacquie Gehring was the instructor, she taught how to machine quilt with your walking foot.
I learned a lot!
I taped painter's tape from one corner to the other, to keep a straight line.
It's so much easier to keep straight lines on a mini quilt though :)

I used the little arm to measure my lines 1" apart.

It took 3 days to finish the quilting, and I really like all the little 1" squares.

Ta da!!!
I used yellow fabric for the binding.

Here's the sweet family who I made the quilt for.
My son Jordan, my daughter in law Kimalee, and their precious little girls.
Reagan is 5 years old, and Paisley is 20 months old.
Paisley is named after me, we both have the same middle name, Louise :)
Jordan and Kim are expecting their third baby girl on February 26.
I wonder if she'll look just like her sisters, I can hardly wait!!!

Farm Girl Vintage Silo Barn

I made another silo barn from my Farm Girl Vintage book by Lori Holt.
The six inch block is called "peas and carrots", so I used green and orange fabric.

I bought a Craftsy class, it was machine quilting with your straight foot, by Jacquie Gehring.
What  a great class, I learned so much!
This is the first time I attempted crosshatch or square machine quilting, and I just love how it turned out.
I find it easy to machine quilt a mini quilt, because it's so simple to maneuver.

I made this mini for my friend, she loves pink and aqua colors together.

I used a Miny Moo back, it makes me feel really happy with all the colorful owls nesting in trees.
I bound the quilt in orange accentuate the orange in the block.
